Holoholo

Hawai'i is often viewed through 2 lenses: the "tropical paradise" of the foreigners, and the culture, sovereignty lens of the Hawaiian activists, educators and entertainers.

These views of Hawai'i are not the perspectives that I, and many locals, experienced: Hawai'i is my dear home, but with all things considered, it's another relatively normal place to live. The perspectives and stories of these people-- this third perspective of Hawaii's reality has not been typically shown.

This series entitled "Holoholo", which translates to "wander," and is the Hawaiian slang for "hanging out and going somewhere," aims to capture this perspective and to show Hawaii's simplicities and realities by focusing on a group of 5 friends who are spending their last summer together in the Islands.

Each illustration focuses on different aspects of life in Hawai'i, primarily through my own personal experiences and observations living on Maui.
